DR EFRAIM VAN DER WALT
Efraim van der Walt matriculated in1980 at the once famous Rooidakskool in a small Free State town, Boshof. Already at the tender age of twelve, he decided that he wanted to become a Plastic Surgeon. He was inspired by Dr. Jack Penn who is recognized as the father of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in South Africa.
He obtained his MBChB degree in 1986 from the University of the Orange Free State, and did his internship in the academic hospitals in Bloemfontein. He was part of the last group of young men who had to do compulsory military service from 1988 -1989. During 1990, while he was waiting to obtain a registrar post in Plastic Surgery, he worked as general medical officer at Botshabelo Community hospital.
At last, in 1991 he was able to start fulfilling his dream: becoming a Plastic Surgeon. The degree MMed (Plast. Surg.) was awarded to him by the University of the Orange Free State in 1996. Although he intended to stay on for a while at the Academic hospital, the sudden and tragic death of his mentor and friend, Dr Kobus van Zyl, effectively forced him to go direct into private practice in Bloemfontein.
He started out at his mentor’s rooms at the old Hydromed Hospital (these days Bloemfontein Mediclinic), but due to space limitations, had to move his consulting rooms to Rosepark Hospital in 2000, where he is still working.
Efraim is operating at Life Rosepark Hospital, Bloemfontein Mediclinic, Netcare Universitas, 3 Military Hospital and Citymed Day Clinic at Preller Square in Dan Pienaar. He is member of the Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of South Africa (APRSSA), member of the South African Cleft Lip and Palate Society, as well as an active member of ISAPS (the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons).
He is married to Ilse, an Occupational Therapist, who gave up her professional career when their two children, Monica and Tjaart were born. His hobbies include macro photography, doing stained glass work, reading and classical music.
Although his initial interest in the field of Plastic Surgery was in reconstructive surgery (and specifically Cleft lip and Palate surgery), he soon fell in love with the artistic and creative challenges of the whole subject of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He regularly attends workshops and conferences in South Africa and abroad, to keep up with emerging new developments.
